If there’s such a thing as a blue blood British stove company, Charnwood is it.
AJ Wells, the manufacturer, was founded in 1972 and remains a family-owned business. Their first stove – the Beacon – rolled off the production line in 1974.
They still produce all their stoves on the Isle of Wight, just across the water from us in the New Forest (Local note: Islanders like to call mainland UK ‘the north island’.)
Their oldest stove still in production, the instantly recognisable Country 12, has been around since 1993 and is still going strong.
Over the years, new lines have been added, building an impressive line-up of contemporary and more traditional looking models. Charnwood has grown into one of the country’s best-loved stove brands, and have successfully exported their stoves all over the globe. The latest – the Regency-inspired Cranmore woodburner – emerged this summer.
They are taking the opportunity of the introduction of Ecodesign in 2022 to slim down their offering, but there will still be an extensive range of woodburning and multi-fuel stoves in single- and double-door variants and even some boiler models will survive the cull.
Charnwood pride themselves not only on the quality and durability of their stoves, but on their customer service, which is second-to-none. All this springs from a deep ethical, faith-based commitment.
All Charnwood stoves come with a ten year guarantee and an unusual no-quibble one-year warranty on ‘consumables’ – the breakable parts of a stove that most manufacturers are understandably wary of replacing free-of-charge. Charnwood offer a 48-hours spares policy, such is their desire to ensure their customers can stay reliably warm all year-round.
They have also been highly innovative in meeting Ecodesign criteria with their proprietary BLU technology, with a number of their stoves easily exceeding these standards and reaching high on the even more rigorous industry ClearSkies Mark. Their consistently ambitious R&D department continues to come up with ingenious technology like the flue boiler system, and we’re always looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
